日本一の岸壁の山でロッククライミングの聖地です。今から５億年前に南国のサンゴ礁でできた山です。
急坂で狭い道の林道を長く走るので、運転が苦手な方は注意してください。
明星山（みょうじさん、みょうじょうさん）は、飛騨山脈北部の新潟県糸魚川市に位置する標高1,188mの山です1。白馬山麗県立自然公園に属しています。
この山は、近隣の黒姫山とともに全山石灰から成っており、岩肌がむき出しの容姿をしています。南側は約400mのスケールを持った岩壁で、西側のルンゼとともに、ロッククライミングの場として人気があります。風雨による浸食が激しく、全般的に残置ハーケンやボルトが抜けやすい傾向があります。
また、岩壁には盆栽で知られる糸魚川真柏が自生しています。さらに、側を流れる小滝川のヒスイ峡も日本を代表するヒスイ産地として有名であり、糸魚川ジオサイトの１つに選ばれています。
登山コースとしては、明星山東側の小滝地区岡集落にある岡登山口からと、南側の小滝ヒスイ峡にある登山口の2つがあります。両登山道は北側で合流し、山頂へと伸びます。山頂の展望はよく、後立山連峰の主稜線や、頸城山塊、日本海を眺めることが出来ます。
Mt. Myojo is the mountain with the highest quay in Japan and is a sacred place for rock climbing. This mountain was formed from a coral reef 500 million years ago. It is a mountain with an altitude of 1,188m located in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, in the northern part of the Hida Mountains1. It belongs to Hakuba Sanrei Prefectural Natural Park.
This mountain, along with its neighboring Mt. Kurohime, is entirely made of limestone, giving it the appearance of an exposed rock surface. The south side is a rock wall with a scale of about 400m, and along with Runze on the west side, it is a popular place for rock climbing. Due to severe erosion caused by wind and rain, there is a general tendency for leftover bolts and bolts to fall out easily.
Additionally, Itoigawa Shinkashi, which is known for its bonsai, grows wild on the rock walls. Furthermore, the jade gorge of the Kotaki River that flows through the area is famous as one of Japan's leading jade production areas, and has been selected as one of the Itoigawa Geosites.
There are two climbing courses: one from the Oka trailhead in Oka village in the Kotaki area on the east side of Mt. Myojo, and the other from the Kotaki jade gorge on the south side. Both trails meet on the north side and extend to the summit. The view from the summit is good, and you can see the main ridge of the Ushiro-Tateyama mountain range, the Kubiki mountain massif, and the Sea of Japan.
